Krakauer sees himself in Chis because they are both adventures and dont have any reason to do the crazy things that they did. This is shown when Chris blows out of his awesome life and starts doing things his way, such as hitch hiking and living off of other people. When Krakauer "rebels" he went to climb Devils Thumb. He couldnt make it to the top because he feared his life too much, unlike Chris who seemed like he didnt really care what happened, or where he was as long as he wasnt home.
